Finally more cakes!! 05/06/2011
Once again it's been forever since I've made a cake. Trust me I've been busy enough without making cakes and I really didn't need the temptation. I've been trying to lose weight and have been working out like crazy and counting my calories. Losing weight feels like a full time job sometimes. So far I'm down just over 10 lbs, which is great, but I still have some work to do. I can only avoid cake so much though and since it was my daughter's fifth birthday cake was a necessity. This was a mini cake for her candles on her birthday. I didn't have a whole lot of time between all our daily activities and didn't really plan, just let her tell me what she wanted. It's a sleeping frog. I should have taken a pic of how she posed to show me where the frogs legs should go. It was too funny! I also made some simple heart shaped cake on a stick for her to share with her friends at playgroup that morning, but I forgot to take a picture of those. For her birthday we planed a luau theme pool party. Strawberry cake with vanilla cream filling. The cupcake were pineapple coconut. Covered with fondant. I used the cricut for the hibiscus cutouts on the cake. The flowers, hula girl and surfboard were made from fondant and gumpaste. The same day as the birthday party, we also attended a baby shower for a good friend. My oldest was a flower girl in her wedding and the big girl in the picture above was just a few weeks old at the time. Gosh, that's hard to believe. Of course I made the cake for the shower as well. Since the mommy to be doesn't know what she's having and all the decorations were in pink and blue, and all the guests were asked to chose "Team Pink" or "Team Blue", it seemed fitting that the cake should ask the same question. I'm so excited to find out the answer to this in a few months and welcome this new little person to the world. For the record I'm Team Blue! A week later I made another couple of cakes for a cake walk at work. This one was simple. I had extra strawberry puree and vanilla buttercream from the previous cakes so I made this. I was pretty happy with how smooth my icing turned out! Since it was for the gym I work at, I made a gym bag cake. Yellow cake with raspberry cream filling. YUM!! Add Comment Baby Shower 06/27/2010
One of my good friends is expecting a little girl and we threw her a shower to celebrate. Like all good celebrations it involved cake. ![]() It was based on these decorations the mommy to be chose. She requested Peanut Butter and Jelly cake with chocolate, unfortunately I forgot to get chocolate. I did manage to get some for the "gift" cake on top, so that was the guest of honors serving. ![]() The baby is being named for my friend's grandmother, who apparently loved elephants and the color green. I decided that this little gumpaste elephant would be a great addition to the cake top. New Moon and Batman Too 03/28/2010
I have a great, fun bunch of girlfriends and several of us are very into The Twilight Saga. Now that New Moon is out on DVD, several of us got together for viewing party. I have to say watching the DVD was so much funner than watching in the theater, because we could talk as much as we wanted. Which was a lot. I made a cake to help us celebrate. I wanted to try and make sure to represent both "teams," so one side depicts a scene with Jacob and the other side depicts a scene with Edward. The cake was Red Velvet with cream cheese filling for the top tier, the base was a cake dummy. I would have like to have spent more time decorating the base, but it was a busy weekend. The cake was covered in marshmallow fondant and the figures were mmf/gumpaste blend. I painted both emblems by hand with food color mixed with vanilla. ![]() This is Bella and Jacob, after Bella jumped off the cliff. I was really pleased with this part of the cake. I hadn't made figures this size before but I think they came out pretty good. ![]() I also made sure to put a werewolf on the cake. I loved the Jacob side of the cake, but I was really running short on time when it came to the Edward side. ![]() I would have like to have more detail on this side, like maybe a fountain, but oh well. Overall I think the clock tower came out nicely. This wasn't the only cake that kept me busy this weekend. I also made this Batman cake for a friend's son, who turned 3. He apparently requested to his mom that I make his cake, which is too cute, so I tried to make something special for him. It was a chocolate cake with chocolate buttercream filling covered in mmf. I think a lot of people know my issues with chocolate cake. Generally, it's just not my friend. I decided while working on this cake that the only thing that dislikes me more than chocolate cake, is black fondant. It took me two attempts to cover this cake. The first time the fondant tore everywhere. On the second try, I applied the fondant in two pieces, which left a seam, but was better than holes. Honestly, the struggles were worth it though when I got to see how excited the birthday boy was about his cake. That's What Little Girls Are Made Of 10/15/2009
This cake was for a little girl's 4th birthday. I was asked to make something girly and I think that was accomplished. Vanilla cake with buttercream, covered in marshmallow fondant, fondant and gumpaste figure and decorations. Push Cake 07/28/2009
There is a possiblity that some may find this post offensive. Just giving everyone a heads up. If you're a fan of cakewrecks you probably know what the "push cake" is all about, if not you may want to check out this post http://cakewrecks.blogspot.com/2008/07/first-censored-cake-wreck.html before you go any further. When I was asked to make a baby shower cake for a friend, I sent along the link to the "push cake" to the host. Now, it's possible she was kidding when she said that I should make that, but I decided to take her at her word and went for it. I absolutely loved result, it was definitely the hit of the party! The lower tier of the cake is a butter cake with a whipped lemon cream cheese filling, the top tier is chocolate with a filling chocolate mint ganache. It's all covered in mmf and chocolate mmf. The figure is mmf/gumpaste blend. If you do head over to cakewrecks you should check out my favorite, the fireman cake. Going to the Fair 07/22/2009
It's fair time! I made 4 cakes for the Montana State Fair. 4! Seriously I think I lost my mind. I was mostly happy with the results, so here they are. ![]() This was my entry for the Small World catagory, a Baby Boy Shower Cake. It's covered in marshmallow fondant, the shoes and pacifier are marshmallow fondant, gumpaste mix, this is a copy of a cake I had done before. This cake took first in it's catagory. ![]() I also remade the Twilight cake I made awhile back, it was entered into the Adult Cakes catagory (get your mind out of the gutter!). I think a few improvements were made in this replica. This cake is also covered in marshmallow fondant, and all figures are fondant/gumpaste blend. This cake took second in it's catagory. ![]() I love the way the flower came out! ![]() For the Holiday catagory I made this Trick or Treating Ghost. He's even got a bag of goodies! He's covered in mmf with mmf "candy treats". Honestly, he's my least favorite of the cakes I entered in the fair. I had a terrible time working with the mmf. This cake took second in it's catagory. ![]() And finally, I made a Back to School cake, for the Special Occasion catagory. I was totally stumped on what to do for this catagory, when a friend suggested this. I'm pretty happy with how it came out, I love the board the cake is sitting on and the pencils in the side pouch. This cake took first in it's catagory. ![]() My five year old also wanted to get in on the action. This was her FIRST cake!! She was entered into the youth catagory. She iced, covered and decorated this cake with just a little coaching from Mom. She called it a Flower Cake with a Smiley Face, the smiley face is on the side. Her cake took second in the youth catagory. Daisy Cake 06/06/2009
![]() Daisy Girl Scout figures. This cake was for a Daisy Girl Scout ceremony and party. It was a cookies-n-cream cake (my kids favorite!) covered in marshmallow fondant. The Daisy patches are also made of marshmallow fondant. The figures are fondant/gumpaste blend. This is the 4th time that I've made figures and I'm really pleased with how they came out. | ArchivesMay 2011 CategoriesAll |
